3. Etiquette: Similar to the concept of “beer muscles”, many people feel a higher sense of confidence when behind a computer screen (as opposed to being face to face). I’m sure that we have all been in a virtual meeting and experienced “that one person” that seems to challenge every item on the agenda. This can be extremely disruptive and can thwart any progress during the meeting. What to Do: Of all the challenges, this appears to be the most problematic. Especially during open meetings, where all residents are provided an opportunity to air their grievances. During these sessions, it can be extremely difficult to stay on task. This results in lengthy, unproductive meetings and can be very frustrating. One of the best approaches to combat this issue is one previously discussed in this article: planning ahead. Preparing a detailed agenda prior to the meeting can go a long way in setting the tone and progression of the meet ing. It is also vital to have a host that can keep the meeting on task. Even if it is just for a few minutes, these breaks will allow people to recharge themselves and be more productive during the meeting.
