Detention and Retention Basins — What’s the difference?
Both being stormwater management facilities designed to control stormwater runoff to prevent flooding. To tell them apart, think about your high school days.Detention, as long as it felt, was meant to be temporary. Detention basins are meant to hold water for no longer than 72 hours. Detention basins are typically installed on or adjacent to, tributaries of rivers, streams or lakes that are designed to protect against flooding and by storing water for a limited period of a time. These basins are also called “dry ponds,” “holding ponds,” or “dry deten- tion basins.” Retention basins are slightly different in that they are designed to permanently hold water. They are
