lifeguards enjoy working and ask for. Let your pool professionals know the positive things you’ve seen from the poolside team. It will help them rein force good work and if they have an incentive program, put some extra dol lars in that guard’s check! This doesn’t mean that you should not communi cate areas needed for improvement, but it will make addressing those improvements go a lot smoother. A lifeguard’s day can be long and monotonous. Recognize that providing ample shade, hydration, and breaks to them results in a better work environ ment and a safer pool. A best practice for single guard facilities is to allow 15 minutes at the start of each hour to clear the pool so the guard can perform secondary duties and take care of them selves. This approach goes a long way in improving the work environment and making it more attractive to applicants. A few minutes to use the restroom, com municate with their supervisor, hydrate, stretch, and reapply sunscreen helps keep them alert and motivated on the job. While the pandemic may be loosen ing its grip on our society, many oper ational challenges associated with the pandemic will remain with us for some time. We should all remain optimistic and excited for the coming season while maintaining awareness that the impacts of the pandemic cannot always be anticipated or negated. n
