personal use that we can’t just turn it all off, no matter how much quieter that might make our lives, so we have to be watchful for a variety of common scams. Most e-mail attacks fall under the “phishing” or “spear phishing” category. Both are using a specifically crafted message to try to get you to do something, be that clicking on something, entering your password, or opening a malicious file. Phishing is something general for everyone, like a fake Amazon receipt for example. These use something common like a popular platform, current events, or fake messages from IT or HR to try to get you. While that may sound easy to avoid, because attackers can usually get perfect copies of what real communi cation from these sources might look like, they can make a very convincing fake. The best defense against phishing, like any security risk, is a layered approach. The first layer is an e-mail filter, getting rid of messages that can be identified as fraudulent. There is an endless arms race between phishing attackers and e-mail filters, so these will never be perfect, but even free personal accounts typically have some form of filtering in place. One temptation with a filter can be to mark “safe” senders too broadly, for instance, allowing all e-mail from Gmail when a friend’s Gmail message was blocked incorrectly. When making exceptions in your filter, you always want to use the smallest change that will give you the results you need. Marking an entire free e-mail service as safe will likely open you up to a huge range of malicious e-mails that would have been filtered otherwise.
