VIRTUAL MEETINGS... from page 27.

be hesitant to step in and put an end to a conversation that is not relevant to the predetermined tasks included in the agenda. In addition, strongly encouraging the use of cameras can go a long way in subduing disruptive attend ees. It appears that there may be an increased comfort level when some one is able to “hide behind” the computer screen. Having them put their camera on may help mitigate some of these disruptive attendees. It is important to remember that the goal is not to silence the attendees, but rather, to promote healthy discussion and the ability to voice any concerns in a professional manner. Another potential solution to this problem can be implemented during the very initial stages when setting up the meeting. Many virtual platforms allow the host to select options for their attendees, such as requiring their microphones to be muted upon entry, etc. This can help mitigate unwanted chatter and background noise not relevant to the meeting. Also, having a “host helper” can go a long way in keeping disruptive attendees from hijacking the meeting. Guidelines and expectations for open forums should be clearly communicated prior to the start of the meeting. If any attendee then violates any of these guidelines, the host helper (or host themselves) can mute those participants during the meeting, or even remove them from the meeting, if needed.
