community management at that time. We would comment on the fact that we were trying to make it in a man’s world. It took some time to gain the respect of the men I was dealing with but I was persistent. Eventually, they realized I knew what I was talking about and most of them entrusted me to handle their insurance needs. As the years went by more and more women got into the community association world, in management, insurance, and legal. It became commonplace for communities to have women as part of their professional teams. I believe it helped women to have women mentors who truly cared about advancements in their careers. There are women’s organizations in every professional industry now… women helping women. I’m not going to lie, there are still men who are not comfortable working with women but thankfully they are few and far between. We’ve come a long way in 40 years! Caroline Record, Esq., CCAL: Quite honestly, I wasn’t look ing to practice in this area of the law when I changed jobs in 1990. However, I was inspired to stay and continue to prac tice in this area of law as a result of the mentors I have been fortunate to have over the years and due to the support and collegiality of the other professionals (managers, accountants, engineers, etc.) I have worked with, in good times and bad. Technology has created the biggest changes in how we all CONT I NU E S ON PAGE 42

new industry. There were new common interest communities being built in record numbers and qualified managers were few. I liked working with so many people and learning about so many different aspects of the various communities such as involvement in maintaining the facilities, account ing, legal matters, understanding insurance policies, and assisting in the governance of the community. Changes in technology provide more flexibility with how meetings are held, and how voting can be accomplished for elections and amendments. This gives homeowners a much greater ability to attend and participate in meetings. There are more educational opportunities available to both managers and homeowner leaders. There are also more certifications available to the managers which gives the managers professional credentials that the homeowner leaders can rely on when choosing their professional team. Everyone benefits from this.
