require the community manager to draw upon their knowledge of reputable companies to perform the necessary services which the community needs. These services include, but certainly is not limited to,general maintenance, landscaping, security, sanitation pick- up, snow removal, and road repairs. Typically when a large project is under- taken that exceeds a specific mone- tary threshold, the community manager requests bids from multiple vendors in order to obtain competitive pricing and reputable vendors. Within large-scale communities, there are often special committees whose members dedicate themselves to a certain objective that benefits the overall community; examples include social events, beautification initiatives, the setting of pool rules and their enforcement. Depending on the level of assistance required, the community manager helps facilitate the actions of these committees so that their objec- tive is achieved. As we can see, community manag- ers play a critical role in the smooth functioning of our communities. The positionrequires a special type of per- son who can juggle all the different demands that board members and residents place upon them. It takes a person who can react quickly, multi- task, think tactically about how to resolve a problem and remain calm while doing so. Doing all that with a sense of purpose and humor is no small feat. As board members, we should give our community managers all the support and understanding they deserve. n
