It means it will be applied as thin as possible, which will cause breakage and damage quicker. Surface course asphalt overlays should not be applied less than 1 ½ inches thick. Thinner applications will cause the material to crack and fail more rapidly. When purchasing by the ton more product gets applied. It runs the risk of the asphalt being too thick, which could cause water and drainage issues in the future. If the asphalt is applied too thick in a single “lift”, it will cause improper compaction and accelerat- ed pavement failure. The only way to get the right amount is by retaining an engineer for construction oversight. It will also ensure a quality project that will last for years while controlling the cost and providing maximum value for your community. Roadway programs and projects do not have to be overly complicat- ed. The key is having the right engi- neer on hand to help you navigate through the process and develop a solid plan moving forward to make sure each step is properly executed. A large portion of this is having an onsite representative to make sure the roadway is properly fixed. This will allow the property manager to focus on their own areas of expertise and not be forced into a situation that requires years of focused experience to master. The overall benefit will be a high-quality project that will last for years to come while maximizing your community’s investment. n
