Drowning Prevention in Your Community

Fortify the safety of your community pool in layers of protection, working from the outside in.

Let’s swim safely this summer! According to the CDC, more children between the ages of 1- 4 die from drowning than any other factor with the exception of congenital birth defects. Expanding the age range to 1-14, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death after motor vehicle accidents. • Education — Sharing information about area Learn to Swim programs and even hosting community CPR training are great ways to reduce the risks of death from drowning. Understanding drowning risks will help the community get behind efforts to enhance facility safety. • Barriers to Entry — Well maintained, four-sided fences that fully enclose the pool and don’t allow direct access from the clubhouse protect against accidental entry to the area. Self-closing and self-latching gates provide obvious benefits. Toys should never be left around the pool area as toddlers are naturally attracted to these items.
