gens such as salmonella and vibrio caused by warming temperatures • Flood-related increases in popu- lation of waterborne parasites such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia, which cause gastroenteritis. 10 Coastal Communities Our shores are our pride. Twenty of New Jersey’s 21 counties are defined as coastal counties. New Jersey has over 127 miles of Atlantic coastline and nearly 1,800 miles of tidal shoreline. 11 These counties con- tain nearly 8 million residents, and their populations can triple during the summer months due to shore related tourism. 12 Coastal communities play a critical role in New Jersey’s economy; in 2018 tourism generated $44.7 billion, or 9.8% of the state’s econ- omy; approximately half of tourism expenditures occurred in just three coastal counties: Atlantic, Cape May, and Ocean. 13, 14 Moreover, tourism generated over $5 billion in state and local taxes. 15 The impacts of climate change on coastal communities will primarily be experienced in two main areas: 1. Rising Sea Levels and 2. Extreme Storm Events. 16 Our communities will need to pre- pare for these new extremes. The impact upon predicted lifespans of building materials, reserve funds and employment may be drastic. Snow skiing resorts in Sussex County could be faced with shorter seasons. Vacation condos in Atlantic County may see eroded beaches and dam- aging storms. These are not events from some apocalyptic nightmare future, these are very real possibili-
1. Heat-Related Illnesses: • Increase in heat related mortality and hos- pitalization from heat stress • Exacerbation of existing chronic conditions such as cardiovascular and respiratory disease conditions. 2. Air Quality Conditions: • Increase in pulmonary and respiratory dis- eases, particularly in urban areas, due to higher levels of ground lev- el-ozone and fine particulate matter associated with higher tempera- tures and increased energy use during high temperature periods • Increase in asthma and allergenic diseases due to a longer pollen season and greater potency of pollen. 3. Storm-Related Injuries and Stresses: • Morbidity and mortality due to falling trees, drowning, and car- bon monoxide poisoning from gen- erators. • Increased mental health issues caused by repeated stressors • Consumption of contaminated food and water as a result of flood- ing, power outages, and displaced populations. • Damage to low-lying health care facilities and infrastruc- ture • Exposure to mold, mildew, and toxic contamination from flood- ing, including flooding of hazardous or contaminated sites • Lack of availability of medications and med- ical equipment as a result of power outages and business closures. 4. Infectious Diseases: • Expanded ranges of vector-borne diseases such as Lyme disease, and West Nile virus • Increase in food-borne patho-
