Ventilation should be reviewed in con- junction with attic insulation. Insulation is generally located on the attic floor which serves as the ceiling to the unit below. It keeps the cold air out of the home and the warm air out of the attic. If the insulation is not installed properly this can also contribute heat in the attic and a more rapid formation of ice dams. As you can see, there are many vari- ables contributing to ice damming and the resulting damages. With proper planning and evaluation of your roofing system, you will not be able to stop ice damming from occurring but, you will be able to minimize the potential for damage to occur as a result. n
