methods for minimizing the potential for water infiltration. One method is the use of an ice barrier which is also known as eave flashing. This is a waterproof membrane that is installed below the shingles starting at the bot- tom edge and extending upwards. The ice barrier prevents moisture result- ing from ice damming from entering

the home. While some homes may already have the ice barrier installed during the original construction, these barriers can be easily incorporated into future roof replacement projects. A similar type of barrier can be used at walls, valleys, and chimneys — the other locations where snow often caus- es leaks. Again, if this has not been installed as part of the initial construction it can easily be added as a part of a roof replacement project. Attic ventilation is also a crucial factor when it comes to ice dams. The ventilation of the attic generally includes soffit venting, which draws cold air in, and ridge vents which dis- charge warm air from the attic. If it is not working properly, the temperature in the attic will not regulate itself, and warmer attic temperatures will acceler- ate the formation of ice dams.
