Checking the batteries at least twice yearly is imperative. Fire alarms with flashing lights are available for hearing impaired individuals, as well. Additionally, make a fire safety plan and practice it with everyone living in or working on the property. This plan should include multiple escape routes and hypothetical scenarios, such as if the front door is blocked, which windows are escapable? Of course, if cooking, stay in the kitchen when the stove and oven are in use. Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and any other room where there is flame or inflammatory activity/ work occurring. We cannot control natural disasters, but we can and should take measures to minimize personal loss and dam- ages. Having proper insurance and unique plans for possi- ble situations will help prepare you for the next emergency event. Take the time to make emergency preparedness a priority for you, your family, and your business today. n
