A SERIOUS CONCERN for those of us living in or managing community associations is that the Spotted Lanternfly is a great nuisance to our residents in and around homes and landscapes. SPOTTED LANTERNFLY... from page 48.

From May through September, when feeding on our trees, the various life stages of the Spotted Lanternfly excrete a sticky liquid nicknamed “honeydew” which drips down onto people, and covers vehicles, and any outdoor sur- faces under the trees. Plus the older stage ‘nymphs’ and adults are large

and congregate on patios, the sides of homes, and in great numbers on landscape trees disrupting our ability to use our outdoor areas and significantly affecting the quality of life for residents.

Spotting the Spotted Lanternfly

You may have already seen Spotted Lanternflies on your trees or homes in your association either as one of the four “instar nymphs” from May through late summer, or as the large flying adults in late summer through the fall. Both nymphs and adults feed on plants by piercing stems and leaves with special- ized mouth parts. They can often be found swarming in large numbers over an infested plant or tree. The SLF insects are most drawn to the ‘Tree of Heaven’, or the Ailanthus tree. If there is an Ailanthus tree on or near your association property, you’ll want to either have it removed or eventually have it treated. Other landscape trees to which it is attracted include, red and silver maple, willow, birch, and walnut. If you don’t know what kind of trees are on your proper- ty, call or make an appointment with a NJ Licensed Tree Expert to find out. SLF feeds on the sap in trunks, branches, twigs and leaves. Look for weeping wounds with a greyish or black trail. As the Spotted Lanternfly digests the sap, it excretes a sub- stance known as honeydew. This sap will attract other insects to feed on it, notably wasps and ants. The wounds also leave trees vulnerable to the growth of fungi. Heavily infested trees may not survive.
