Speed Bumps/Speed Humps Speed bumps and speed humps are traffic calming devices which consist of raised areas of permanently installed road, or moveable devic- es, that force drivers to slow down as they are passed over. Similar devices include rumble strips. Speed bumps are shorter and more abrupt raised areas, while speed humps are longer and more gradual, and are considered a gentler version of speed bumps. Speed bumps and speed humps are somewhat con- troversial, and their effectiveness in actually changing driver behavior or increasing overall safety has been questioned by some.
