FPE Stab-Lok Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab- Lok circuit breakers were original- ly manufactured beginning in the 1950s, and were installed throughout the United States in single and multi- family homes. In June 1980, Reliance Electric Co., the parent company of Federal Pacific Electric, reported to the CPSC that many Stab-Lok circuit breakers did not fully comply with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) calibra- tion test requirements. These require- ments were related to “tripping” the circuit breakers within specific time limits of overloading the circuit. This lack of “tripping” the circuit has led to electrical issues and property losses in many cases. FPE was the target of class action lawsuits due to these defects, and is now out of business. The Consumer Product Safety Commission began an investigation of this product in 1980, but did not have the necessary budget to gather sufficient data on the circuit break- ers. Because of this, the investigation concluded in 1983 with no formal decision on the product. No product recall was issued, but manufacturing of the product ended in the mid- 1980s. Due to the hazards associated with this product, remediation of these cir- cuit breakers is recommended when- ever they are found. Unfortunately, the only remediation method that is recognized by insurance carriers is replacing the circuit breakers.
