“It’s also important to keep the house and surrounding area clear of combustibles.”

Whether a Firewise Community or not, here are some basic steps to take to reduce the risk of a wildfire impacting your community. • In general, houses that are destroyed by wildfires catch on fire because embers reach combustible materials that are too close to the home. Once the combustible materi als ignite, they can catch the rest of the home on fire. • To prevent a home from catching on fire, it’s important to keep combustible materials as far away from the house as possible. • It’s also important to keep homes and the surrounding area clear of combustibles. Remove leaves from gutters, keep debris off the roof, and keep surrounding properly clear from combustible materials that could easily spread to the house.

• This also applies to landscaping. Avoid planting any thing 0-5 feet from the home. Instead, consider laying a bed of crushed stone or rock mulch. • If you want to plant anything 5-30’ from the house, keep it low to the ground and spread apart in a way that the fire can’t jump from plant to plant. • Beyond 30’, consider keeping tall trees trimmed so that it’s harder for them to catch fire. It is recommended that homeowner associations located within or near heavily wooded areas look into the program. The FireWise USA website (*see link below) describes the process to becoming a certified FireWise community. n
