How CAI Uses Our PAC Dollars By Liz Comando, CMCA, PCAM, Taylor Management Company, AAMC, AMO and Carol Shenk, EBP, SageWater

I n 1993, CAI established a Political Action Committee (CA-PAC) to ensure its voice is heard in Trenton. As you can imagine, legislators’ decisions can significantly impact millions of people who live and work in community associations. The CA-PAC helps us support legislators that advocate for well-reasoned legislation and oppose legisla tion that creates unnecessary burdens on the governance and operation of community associations. CAI uses our PAC dollars in three significant ways: • Lobbyists: CAI lobbyist, Michele Jaker of MBI - Gluck Shaw in Trenton, is instrumental in providing access to gov ernment legislators, education, advocacy, and enabling community association interests to gain power in numbers. • Fundraiser Tickets: During candidate fundraisers, members of our New Jersey Legislative Action Committee (NJ-LAC), which is the fundraising arm of CA-PAC, can meet with legislators or their staff to discuss issues con cerning community associations. As George Greatrex, former NJ-LAC Chair and Partner at Hill Wallack LLP, has aptly stated, “Our PAC dollars don’t buy votes, they gain us access.”

• Campaign Donations: Our PAC enables us to contribute to legislators’ election campaigns who have supported community associations and advanced our mission. CA-PAC dollars have afforded us some important leg islative successes in Trenton. By attending fundraisers, members of the NJ-LAC can further CAI interests and draft language for legislation such as the COVID-19 Immunity CONT I NU E S ON PAGE 42
